UN REPORT: KENYA DROUGHT THROUGH TO 2010


Kenya's drought and food shortages are expected to last until March 2010, seven months longer than previously projected, said a joint Kenya-United Nations report posted online Thursday.

As many as 2.5 million people face acute food shortages for the next year because they live in areas hardest hit by the drought — semi- arid Northern and parts of southeastern regions of Kenya are said to be in dire need, in a report of the Kenya Food Security Steering Group.


"The failure of the 2008 mid-October to December short rains ... has precipitated a food security crisis in those areas," the report said. "Apart from crop failure, the poor rains caused severe water shortages."

These areas include among others, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Mrasabit, Moyale, Isiolo, Samburu and Ukambani Areas...
