A dentist and a nurse were injured when fire gutted a section of the Garissa Provincial General Hospital.
The dentist was airlifted to Nairobi Monday by a team from Amref for treatment. She was admitted to Nairobi Hospital. The two medics were evacuated by colleagues and the public who were assisted by military personnel based in the area.
The inferno, which started at the dental section, also spread to the pharmacy, canteen and the mental departments.Hundreds of residents, who were attracted by the fire, helped the military officers put out the fire using buckets of sand. The officers used water bowsers.
Efforts to put out the spreading fire were frustrated by the lack of fire engines as the only one donated to the Garissa council was grounded after a road accident two months ago.
US marines who were drilling bore holes in the town’s suburbs later joined in fighting the fire, which destroyed drugs worth millions of shillings and other equipment at the hospital’s pharmacy department.
